National Prematurity Awareness Month

Image property of FBLA-PBL and March of Dimes

November is National Prematurity Awareness Month. March of Dimes has made it their mission to help mothers to be have healthy full babies through education. If something goes wrong then March of Dimes is there to offer comfort the family.

It is the goal of March of Dimes to lower the nation’s prematurity birth rate down to 9.6% or lower by 2020. The March of Dimes releases a national report card that grades each state. Georgia has a C for this year. It is our goal to raise that up to at least a B by next year.

Phi Beta Lambda has made it our mission to help raise awareness. This year we have a project called “Purple in Action”. It’s a way to tell the stories of those who have been touched by the March of Dimes.
Our chapter is also working to support National PBL with fundraising and promoting awareness. On November 18, 2013 we are requesting that everyone wear purple in support of National Prematurity

Awareness Day (It’s actually November 17th but that falls on a Sunday so SGTC Americus PBL will observe it that following Monday). We will also be selling fresh Otis Spunkmeyer cookies (2 for $1.00). All funds raised will go to the March of Dimes.

There is more! There is a page on GoFundMe for our chapter. The goal is to raise $2000 by December 15th, 2013. If we accomplish this goal then I will let our chapter dye my hair purple. Yes, you read that right. This red hair will become purple. All profits will go straight to March of Dimes from GoFund on behalf of the Americus SGTC Phi Beta Lambda.

Help make a difference in a family’s life. Below are some links to tell you how.

Salvation Army Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive

Secretary Charleen Hegg and Vice President Ethan Johnson taking a break from assembling boxes for Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive

It’s that time of year again SGTC! Time for the boxes to come out and the nonperishable items start pouring in. We started putting the boxes out Wednesday, October 30th in varies programs and general core classrooms for donations. We will collect all donations and Thanksgiving donations on Tuesday, November 26, 2013. The program with the most nonperishable items will receive a trophy that will serve as bragging rights until next year when we put the boxes out again. The winning program will also be recognized on our blog for their donations.

It goes beyond the bragging rights and trophy. Hunger is a huge issue here in South Georgia. 1 in 5 South Georgians are living with food insecurity every day. 1 in 4 are children (Americus Times Recorder) Your donations will help make a difference within our community. All food collected will be donated to the Salvation Army in Americus.

So help PBL make a difference today. All nonperishable items in original packaging is welcomed.  We thank you for your support.

The SRAC is a team of members dedicated to assisting in the expansion of PBL’s Southern Region and the promotion of national programs. Jackson says she has a passion for service and she “can’t wait” to serve the Southern Region members of PBL.

As a student at South Georgia Tech, Jackson has earned numerous accolades, including being named PBL President for SGTC’s Americus chapter, Student of Excellence; first, second, third, and  fourth place finishes at PBL 2013 district competitions; Who’s Who in PBL, and is the Vice President of the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) and a member of Student Leadership Council (SLC) as a Marketing Management Representative.

Sumter Harvest Festival Scarecrow Contest

For the second year in a row Sumter County is holding a scarecrow contest. SGTC's Phi Beta Lambda entered a scarecrow in the contest. The chapter and advisors wanted to find a chapter project that would promote South Georgia Technical College as well as the PBL chapter.

It was a great team building/ ice breaker for both newly elected officers and members. Students from the Motorsports and Automotive program also helped in creating the PBL scarecrow. The theme that SGTC's PBL used was "Growing Leaders".

The community votes via text on what they believe to be the most outstanding scarecrows. Winners of the contest will be announced on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the Sumter Harvest Festival in Lenny’s Market. The prize is bragging rights until next year.

Johnson named SGTC Student of Excellence for October 2013

SGTC Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. John Watford presents Ethan Johnson with his Student of Excellence plaque.

South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Criminal Justice Technology student Ethan Johnson of Oglethorpe was named Student of Excellence for the month of October during the college’s student recognition ceremony held in the John M. Pope Industrial Technology Center on the Americus campus recently.

Johnson received a plaque of recognition and a financial award from SGTC for his accomplishments. He was nominated for this honor by SGTC Criminal Justice Technology instructor Teresa McCook.

Johnson is a member of SGTC’s Student Leadership Council (SLC) and Phi Beta Lambda (PBL). Johnson traveled to Anaheim, California earlier this year with PBL to compete nationally against students in other technical colleges and universities across the country, and earned first place in the Justice Administration competition.

“Ethan is very determined. He always has a plan and makes sure he accomplishes his goals,” said Johnson’s instructor, Teresa McCook. “He’s always on time and well-prepared.”

“I want to thank my instructors for their endless support and encouragement,” said Johnson.

Johnson’s sister, Jenilee Johnson of Oglethorpe, a Culinary Arts student, was also nominated for Student of Excellence for the month of October, and the two participated in the program together.

Each month, students from certain divisions selected for that month are nominated for the Student of Excellence award by their instructors. This month’s ceremony recognized students in health and personal services programs at SGTC. The winner is selected based on grades, work ethic, participation in clubs and organizations, and amount of program completion.
