65 Years of Achieving The Dream
South Georgia Technical College |
South Georgia Technical College is located in the
heart of Americus, Georgia. Originally SGTC was aviation training facility
during World War I and World War II. The facility was known at the time as
Souther Air Field (Souther Field). South Georgia Technical College celebrated its 65th anniversary with the rededication of the Energy and Transportation building on October 22, 2013.
South Georgia Technical College is a school rich in history. Charles A. Lindbergh bought his first plane; (a Jenny) from Souther Field.
Lindbergh was the first to fly from New York to Paris nonstop in “The Spirit of
St. Louis” in 1927. Initially in 1948 the school was named South Georgia Trade
and Vocational School, until the phrase “trade school” dropped in 1963. After
the change the school was identified as South Georgia Technical and Vocational
School. Furthermore the school name changed once more as a result of 1988 a
legislative act. Although the name did not become official until Governor Roy
Barnes enacted the Educational Reform Bill on November 2, 2000.
As of today SGTC offers many Associate degree
programs ranging from aviation, motorsports, and nursing. SGTC is one of two technical college's in Georgia that provides dorm options for their students. New growth and
development has accrued since Sparky Reeves was appointed school President
in 2004. Sparky Reeves is only the sixth person in the schools rich history to
uphold such an honorable position.
SGTC is dedicated to serving its student body, instructors, staff, and the community. SGTC gives its student body the whole campus life experience as well as the education to where each student that graduates becomes productive in the workforce and the community.
